Dr. Rick Arthur is currently equine medical director at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine assigned full time to the California Horse Racing Board. A world-renown expert in the field of veterinary medicine, Dr. Arthur advises the CHRB on all matters relating to equine health, welfare and drug testing. Dr. Arthur has been actively involved in racehorse medication and drug-testing issues at the state, national, and international levels for many years. Prior to becoming equine medical director Dr. Arthur operated a racetrack veterinary practice on the southern California Thoroughbred circuit for over 30 years. Some of Dr. Arthur’s most famous “patients” include Ancient Title, John Henry, Tiznow, and Pleasantly Perfect. As a former thoroughbred owner and breeder, Dr. Arthur has said, “I believe all racetrack vets should own a racehorse or two. It helps them appreciate the trials and tribulations of horse ownership.” Long-affiliated with the American Association of Equine Practitioners, Dr. Arthur served president in 1997, and received the AAEP President’s Award in 2014. Dr. Arthur is a member of the International Federation of Horseracing Authority’s (IFHA) Advisory Council on Prohibited Substances and the IFHA Welfare Committee. He is also a member of The Jockey Club.
